I've been using Mailman Pro for weeks with no problem. Today I am sending my weekly newsletter of around 3000. It sent successfully to 230 and all of a sudden popped up with an internal server error. When I try to resend, it tells me it has sent 230 or the 3000, and if I want to resume. Of course I resume. I then receive the internal server error.

I know this may well have nothing to do with Mailman Pro, but would like to see if you have any insight on what might cause this - or some direction on how I might track the problem down.

Tom

Not sure if this is relevant or not, but I did receive a notice of a new subscriber that may have taken place while the send was in process where I received the internal error.

I may well try and do a complete resend and see what happens. Unfortunately, many folks will then receive duplicates.

To help track this further, I restarted the whole send again, and it is in process. Thus, I was not able to resume the resend because of an internal server error, but I am able to start a fresh send. Hopefully it will finish successfully.

This brings up a possible enhancement to the program -- an option to do a partial send to specific numbers of recipients, such as in my case of the failed send - to send to record numbers 231-3000.

Sure enough, as I'm typing, I again received an internal server error as it was sending. It may have again stopped at the same record number, I'm not sure. When I click to send, I am told it sent to 230 of 3028.

Is there a way to records 230 and 231 to look if they somehow became corrupt?

Hello Tom,

When the script sends out a message to a list, it uses a copy of the original list, so additional subscribers can't cause it.

Unfortunatly, the "Internal Server Error" messages doesn't help us in finding out what causes it.

Do you have access to the error log entries of your web server? This might help.

It also could help to see the entry 231 of the copy of your list. The file is called sendlistdata.tmp and is located inside the mmp/data directory.
Sincerely,

Frank Bauer

Hello Tom,

Sounds like entry line 231 causes it. Could you let me know the content of the entry line 231 of the copy of your list. The file is called sendlistdata.tmp and is located inside the mmp/data directory.

Here is line 231:

dansworx@rocketmail.com|||

Can't see how that would cause a problem.

For now, I assume this may be a solution... In my text editor, delete the first 230 entries from the list and then create a new list using the balance of the file - and simply send my newsletter to that group.

Hello Tom,

Hmmm... that entry looks good. Just to make sure... could you check also an entry before and after that one?

Your "work-around" will not work that easy...

You would also need to edit the senddata.tmp file. It is also located in the mmp/data directory.

It contains this data:
$list:|:$from:|:$name:|:$html:|:$subject:|:$total:|:$done:|:$starttime:|:$orglist:|:$usetotal:|:$fileName

You would need to correct: $total and $done

BTW: Just a thought... did you try to decrease the "Maximum time for each manual subscription, unsubscriptions or messages send process at each run. Decrease value if your server stops early with "Internal Server Error"." setting in the "Script Settings" section?
Sincerely,

Frank Bauer

The entries before and after also appear fine. As far as my work-around, it should do the trick because when asked to continue the partial send, I say no. I created a new list with the unsent names. This should and is working, as long as I'm sure to have all unsubscribe requests sent to my admin address and I remove all those from the "actual" list. In fact, because I am under some time pressure, I did do this, it is now sending.

The interesting thing is I included the offending address and when I tried to send, it immediately gave me the internal error. Once I removed that address, the sending started just fine (and is currently at record 300 or so).

Regarding the maximum time for manual sub and unsub, I did not change those. However, before writing you the first time today, I did increase the times for (is it) between sends.

Now I need to be sure to print out these messages should I run into this again. It is nice to know about the senddata.tmp structure - as it turns out, I assume I could have simply changed the pointer (:$done:-) to the address after the offending address.

It amazes me why sendmail would choke on that address since it has been in my list ever since I started using mailman pro.

As always, thank you for your prompt replies.

Hello Tom,

Yes, you are right... you could have simply changed the $done part in the senddata.tmp file... sorry I didn't think of that earlier.

Let's see if we can find out why it had a problem with dansworx@rocketmail.com ...

Could it be, that something that you have save under "Access Banning" could cause this?
Sincerely,

Frank Bauer

As it turns out, I had the same problem a number of times during the sending. Every one of these addresses are not new and have been successfully sent in prior weeks. I cannot see any logical reason for it choking on the addresses. There is nothing similar with them; there was no logical sequence on a record number when it stopped.

Here were the addresses. I can backtrack for the record numbers if you want, but those numbers don't make sense.

dansworx@rocketmail.com
cristina.dragomir@bancpost.ro
lisepyles@comcast.net
wognacious@aol.com
smoody627@yahoo.com

I am going to try a send to just these addresses to see if it gives me the same problem if these are the only ones.

Okay... I just made the attempt. It choked on the first address. I change the done pointer to 1 and it successfully sent the rest.

Crazy.

Hello Tom,

So, you have now been able to email the last 4 of the 5 addresses, right?

Hmmm...

Could it be, that something that you have save under "Access Banning" could cause this?

Would it be ok if I try to send a test email to those with my Add2it Mailman Pro installation?

BTW: What is your "New Message Line" type setting in the "Script Settings" section, and does it help if you change that setting?

Sorry, I feel like I am ...
Sincerely,

Frank Bauer

First off, yes, I've now been able to send to four of the five. I just now tried to send to the one remaining address and again got the internal server error.

I'm uncomfortable about you sending a test message to that one address, but go ahead.

Access banning is totally blank.

Also, like I said, I've been sending to the same addresses that are now causing the internal server error for weeks. I'm trying to get hold of my host to try and track down the server errors.

The new message line setting in the script settings is standard.

Hello Tom,

I just send a very short note saying: "Subject: Test message, please delete..."...

As I thought, the script send it out without an internal server error.

What I could do to find out what causes this, is the following:

With FTP access to your server I could add that one email address to a test list and set breakpoints into the sending routine to narrow down at what point the Internal Server Error gets triggered.

So I would say it definitely has nothing to do with the email address on it's own.

Maybe also your servers error logs could help.
Sincerely,

Frank Bauer
