No, this will not be an anthology of events, but rather some impressions. The year started off with dire warnings about viruses that would "eat our hard drive" and turn our computers into a pile of worthless scrap metal. While some were real threats, the majority fell into the hoax variety, intended to scare the computer newbies, who immediately passed them on without checking to see if they were real. Homeland security was a big issue. Hardly a week would go by without some Legislator announcing a new plan to spend our money. Some Government computers however, despite the grandiose plans, were still fair prey for the "Hackers". Even the entire Internet was brought to a standstill on several occasions. Anti-Spam Advocates won a major battle requiring that it be made easier to be removed from mailing lists. It also required that "ADV" be included in the subject line of the email they sent. I don't know about you, but I am still having my requests to be removed, being returned as undeliverable because a forged address was used to send it, and seldom see "ADV" in the subject line. We saw MLMs come and go, but what else is new. This happens all the time and last year was no exception. With "visions of sugar plums" the uninitiated plunked down their hard earned bucks, and signed up in droves, only to find that if they wanted to succeed, they had to work. When they didn't earn their million the first month, while sitting in front of the TV eating "bon-bons", they lost heart. Again dot.coms came and went at a frightening pace. Some invested "big bucks" in their web sites, only to learn they couldn't compete with the local stores, and couldn't sell overpriced items - plus shipping and handling - just because it was on the web. Surviving dot.coms however, had learned that lesson and prospered. Some believed the propaganda that "Job" was a dirty word and fell into the 40-40-40 trap - work 40 hours a week for 40 years and retire at 40 percent of your pay. They scraped up a hundred bucks or so, and purchased "automatic submission" software that sent their ads to all the major web sites and ezines that accept free ads. Web site owners and publishers quickly recognized this, and filtered all their emails into the delete bucket. The only people who made any money from this were those selling the software. Others purchased mailing lists that contained millions of email addresses, and found most were returned as undeliverable. The pundits continued suggesting that anyone can publish an online newsletter or ezine. What they didn't say is that you have to be at least semi-literate to do so, and will be competing with over 400,000 other publications for a subscriber base. There have been many startups, and just as many who found that publishing is work - there's that dirty word again. Some even gave away free ads in their publication but found they were concentrating on the wrong thing. There is a world of difference between "readers" and people who subscribe only to see if their ad has been published. Readers want content, not just a bunch of ads with an occasional article. Identity theft and web scams continued to flourish and were the top consumer complaints last year. Many investors have wised up however, and the high tech stocks which were highly overvalued from the "get go", have continued taking a beating. The merchants of "doom and gloom" once again predict dire results for the new year. But, the market which shapes all our lives, like life in general, will have its ups and downs. There will be winners and there will be losers, but isn't it like that all the time. The scamsters did flourish. With new "fresh from the farm" computer buyers arriving on the web daily, P.T. Barnum would have had a field day. "A sucker is born every minute" couldn't be truer. Funny thing is that most of the scams were simply reworked versions of ones that have been around for years. The web however, provided easy access to these uninformed, whose greed outweighed their common sense. My impression is that 2003 will be a great year. The opportunities we face will only increase as the new technology continues to emerge. "You need to develop your own products or services!" Like most people who hear this message, I agreed intuitively, but it took a long time to figure out HOW to do that. Let's shorten that learning curve for you by telling you HOW to develop you own products or services. In part 1 of this article we'll look at how to develop your own product because I know that is usually more profitable in the long-run. With a service, your growth is limited by the supply of the service you can provide. Providing many services is too labor-intensive or too limited by "the system" to allow unlimited growth. The easiest product in the world to develop is an information product. It's so easy that I personally know more people than I can count who have earned millions doing it. They develop information products that you produce once - and then they sell them forever, with very little additional work required after their creation. What do we mean by information products? I use the term to describe books, ebooks, video and audio tapes, transcripts, CDs, digital audio files, and even software. With all of these products, you write them once, produce them once, and then sell them forever with very little per unit cost. You can breath life back into them when they start fading by updating them or issuing a new release. With these information products, you create them, set up a website, organize a marketing campaign, and then - literally - sit back and watch the money flow in. If you set up your own affiliate program to market these information products you have thousands of people all working diligently to make you a success. Creating an information product really is the easiest thing in the world. I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, I don't know enough about any topic to write my own product. I thought that too for the longest time. You've all heard the advice, write about what you know. If you really don't believe that you know enough about a topic to produce an information product, then identify a topic that you would like to know more about, and BECOME the expert on that product. Unless there are already too many experts on that topic, or unless absolutely nobody cares about that topic, you have a guaranteed winner. To convince you that what I teach is true, let me share a few examples from my own background: With prompting from my website visitors, I wrote a cookbook. I wasn't sure the demand would be there. However, once I committed to writing the cookbook the project went very quickly. This cookbook sold over $100,000 worth of copies (in hardcopy and digital format combined) in it's first year. I wrote an book explaining how to publish your own cookbook. This book is available in ebook format and since so many people have considered writing their own cookbook, this is a natural bestseller. I'm finishing up a book on how to generate massive traffic to your website. Why did I choose that topic? The single biggest problem facing every webmaster on the face of the earth is getting enough visitors to his site. I researched, brainstormed, and experimented with virtually every traffic generation method I could find. The results is a book that HAS TO SELL. The affiliate program for this product has to succeed. The pent-up demand for a quality product on this topic is that tremendous! I turned my personal experience with pay-per-click search engines into both an ebook and a tele-seminar. I hold tele-seminars on how to create a can't fail pay-per-click campaign. The tele-seminar is recorded and participants get reprint rights to the tele-seminar. This generated 3 products really. (1) The tele-seminars themselves, (2) the reprint rights to the tele-seminars and transcripts, (3) the recordings of the tele-seminar which I can market as a separate product or use as a bonus with other products. I recently spoke at an internet marketing seminar where I got reprint rights to the full audio and video recordings of the seminar. This is a product that easily sells for $300 and I can now market this forever. I market these seminar tapes directly and through an affiliate program. I've just given you real-life examples of several information products that were produced in very little time. They all have very real perceived value, but cost very little to produce. They will each sell for years to come... some of them will undoubtedly be selling for the rest of my life. That's the beauty of creating and marketing information products. I'm sure you now see how incredibly easy it is to create information products. -- With the tele-seminar, all you have to do is make arrangements with one of the numerous companies that offer this service - they can record the event and some offer transcription services. -- With the workshop, the recording crew just had to record the event as it unfolded. -- With the books, I just created an outline, added sub-bullets under each major heading and then added more to the product each time I sat down to work on it. I did corroborate with a few other people on the traffic book because I did not have all of the expertise and experience necessary to create a product of this magnitude. People enthusiastically jump at the chance to help with a project like this! You do see a lot of products on the market that you wonder how well they are selling. Therefore, you do need to spend sufficient time in the beginning - confirming that your info product is needed. I generate product ideas by discussing them with others, by "listening" at discussion forums, and by reading books that stimulate my creative faculties. A good book on creative thinking is worth it's weight in gold. My favorite book on creating info products is by Jeff Smith. It's called The Ultimate Information Entrepreneur's Success Package. Jeff and I discussed creating information products at length, as he was finishing up this book. Discussing your product ideas with others both generates new ideas and helps point out the flaws in your ideas. You do have to get over the fear of someone stealing your ideas. That IS a possibility, but there is an endless stream of product ideas. Also, just because a product has been created doesn't mean that you can't introduce a similar (better) product. Heck, there's still room for hundreds of more cookbooks... :-) I discussed cookbooks with Armand Morin at the recent Internet Marketing Power Workshop. For those of you who don't know Armand, he generated $4,000,000 in sales from one software product in 12 weeks. The even more amazing thing about this feat is that he doesn't even know how to write software code. He hired someone to write this program for a few hundred dollars. That's the power of information products and other digital products. Armand told me he has also written a cookbook. That validates the fact that cookbooks are a perpetual hot seller. Audra Gehrke: "Just my opinion but safelists just don't work like they used to. They tell you on their main page to use a junk email account. Everyone else is doing that too and that's why your ads don't get results. They worked good when they first came out but like everything else in life, everything changes. Try ezine advertising, it works Great!:)" John Dilbeck: "Avoid advertising where your ad is mixed with hundreds of others. Take the time to build a good website and gather your visitors' email addresses. Write your own newsletter where you can build your reputation and establish trust with your readers. Make your ads stand out by lending your credibility to them. You'll never prosper by just throwing ads into a heap and hoping someone will stumble upon them. Sure it takes time and effort, but all good things take time to build." Henry E. Stewart: "Some enticements border on being fraudulant! The Subject Line is FIRST CONTACT..."Love at First Sight"...so to speak. Use a first name, if you have one. What might they be dissatisfied with? What are they looking to accomplish? Is their job a pain, or their boss? Lack of Job or the need for more money? Retirement? Examples: (Name), It's a 30 Second Commute (Name), Have you heard... (Name), Are you looking to Retire? (Name), Want More Time With Your Family? If it's a sure thing, you might put Guaranteed, More Time With Your Family! (Name), Go To Work In Your Pajamas! Jeff Sheets: "By carefully wording the ad to coincide with the statistics of the list. If you have a list of Automotive followers, don't try to sell them on something off-topic, such as financial unless you tie it in with automotive somehow." Don Phillips, Editor of Solutions Ezine: "Give Freebies as an enticement to click on your URL or email address." Karen Clough: "From everything I have read, which is a lot, on this subject lately, the best way is to present an honest, but brief subject line. Do not put in any thing threatening, such as 'Your account is about to be deleted...' Threats just make me mad." James M. Booth: "Unproven strategy: My only hope is to be consistent. Offer quality and make my subject line recognizable - a little offbeat humour to stand out. Do not waste reader's time. Repeat. Keep my chin up." Ben E. Kitchens M.D.: "It has to be stand out in some way. You first have to see how all of the other ads look and make your ad different in some way. The greater the difference, the more chance it will be read." Comments: If you want better chances that it will be read, the subject is definitely the single most important thing of the whole message. The body ad copy should be short, honest and to the point. Be sure you track the results of your message to be able to improve that subject and the body ad copy. And what I wrote before applies the same way for ezine ads. 2. How can I develop personal relationships with my niche subscribers? It is perhaps CRM (Customer Relationship Management)? (Question submitted by: Saqib Ali Ateel) Ken Denton: "Personal relationships are developed over time, not over night. The best thing you can do is try to communicate as you would with a friend or family member. Be consistent and let your own, unique personality show through. Give them an opportunity to interact with you. Over time, your subscribers will begin to see you as a trusted friend." Linda Landry, Cybershopnews: "I have a new ezine and each time I publish, I try to be a little more 'familiar' to my audience. I encourage their feedback and I hope this will create a 'niche' of subscribers. I also give away a 1st or 2nd sponsor placement when possible. I am hoping the generosity will be seen as my sincere effort to assist; not just capitalize on my readership." Audra Gehrke: "You can develop a relationship with your subscribers, customers and whoever you do business with by writing and telling them a little about you in each issue. Be honest and upfront with them. People are tired of the hype and they look forward to reading each issue when your open and honest with them. Tell them about your ups and downs, what's going on in your home life. This is how they get to know you and they will respond to it. People look for things they need in ezines so always be sure your offering a product or service that you yourself have at least tried. If it works, let them know your results. If it doesn't, let them know that too and they can make their own judgement if they want to try it or not. All in all, just be yourself when writing, be honest and personal and talk to them like they are right there with you. And when someone emails you, be courteous and send a reply no matter if it's just a Thank You." John Dilbeck: "I've read about CRM for months and still don't know what it means. I think you can build personal relationships with your subscribers by learning more about them personally. Sure, it takes time and effort, but we all like being treated as individuals. Offer them ways to give feedback (such as this survey) and then respond to them. Ask your readers to offer tips and interesting tidbits that you can then pass along to your newsletter or discussion group and give them credit for submitting them. You can promote yourself while promoting those who support you. I don't think you prosper by managing customer relationships. I think you prosper by helping people and letting them know you think of them as your friends." Jason Hillard: "Talk to them. Your first priority is to EDUCATE, not to sell. When they get to trust you, then they will start buying from you. Throw in freebies with offers to sweeten the deal. DO NOT just blast ads out to them. This is the worst possible thing to do, and yet, so many "gUrUs" do just that. They lose my respect for not treating me like a person. Instead, they treat me like a commodity. I always get 'sales letters' from 'gUrUs'. I ditch them. Keep your customers/subscribers informed, not try to sell to them in each edition. Treat others as you would like to be treated. If you don't want spam, don't produce spam! Simple. BTW: All 3 questions relate to building a 'relationship' with others online. The more people get to know you and trust your judgement, the more likely they are to pay attention to you. This should result in an upsurge of sales, albeit, steadily. This is not a race. This is not a game. It is an industry which relies on people supporting each other. Just like in your own community where you live. Life on the net should not be any different to life offline." Jeff Sheets: "Send them on-topic information and/or survey them to see what they like. I agree that it is CRM, but it is also Market Research because you may hit on something in common with more than one niche." W. Karl Heim: "In short: Do to them as YOU would like to be treated yourself." Don Phillips, Editor of Solutions Ezine: "I use http://www.BirthdayAlarm.com to get their birthdays and send Ecard." Emilie Boyles: "I offer lots of feedback opportunities... when products or services go out the door, they are accompanied by customer service (pre-paid postage) cards which asks for both formatted and open-response feedback. Also, I target surveys for niche groups. For example, one niche group may be science teachers. I'd open a dialog about standards in their states, text books used, ect. Even though I don't offer those things, it draws me into their thinking and then I can tailor pitches accordingly." Sheila Cain: "Encourage your readers to write to you. Always leave a link in your newsletter like: mailto:me@isp.com?subject=I_know_exactly_what_you_mean. Or anything that is appropriate to what you have written." Clair Bird, Editor of Net-Works-News: "Respond promptly anytime they ask or comment on anything. Then the relationship will flourish if the fit is right." Karen Clough: "If you use autoresponders be sure that you take the time to personalize every message that is sent out to your subscribers." James M. Booth: "Follow through. Be genuine. Positive. Provide relevance. Add humor. Do allow discouragement. BTW: Why do so few think in terms of helping people to make money rather than just grabbing a few bucks where they can? 'Grow Your Market' Enable people to have money to spend. Thinking long-term is outside the realm of imagination for too many." The online leader you describe won't be around long, or will be on to the next scam. A true leader is one who fulfills his own goals by helping you achieve yours. The problem with online leadership is: It's hard to find the ones who want to work with you. I've joined numerous programs where I couldn't find help from any of my upline members as well. It goes both way online. So what you do is network. You go out and find people who will support you and you support them. Join in some forums to get to knwo others, offer your advice and any help you can give. It's harder online because we have email, chat, forums but no face to face, so we have to weed out the get rich quick from the ones who are ready to work to get what they want. He had a stand in a large Oregon Mall and couldn't keep his product in stock more than a day. He'd been open about 4 months and then had a "closeout" sign on his stand.
