Brilliantly clever advertising executives often come up with ad campaigns that dazzle viewers. Viewers may be dazzled, but whether they can discern what is actually being communicated in the ad remains to be seen. When considering how you want to phrase your advertising copy, don't tailor the message to what would impress you. Tailor the message to what would sell to everyone. The fact is, most people only read, listen, and watch advertising with a tiny percentage of their brain. When I'm watching TV and it comes time for the advertisements, I usually head to the kitchen for a handful of M&Ms. But I can still hear the TV. The human brain takes in everything that goes on--sights, sounds, feelings--so whether your viewer is consciously paying attention to your message or not, some level of their psyche is taking it in. But whether your message is stored away in the long-term memory depends on the clarity of your ad. I don't remember things I don't understand. No one does. So your advertising will only make a long-term impact if the message is clear. Otherwise, it will be forgotten within minutes. That is why it is important to keep your advertising copy as simple as possible. One of the top two reasons marketing fails is because the ad isn't clear. Here are some imperative tips to keep in mind when writing and designing your ads: 1. No jargon. Many advertisers make the mistake of using their own industry jargon and buzz words when writing their ads. As much sense as they make to themselves, they may not be making a bit of sense to the common consumer. Remember, your advertising isn't just targeted at your fellow lawyer or your computer engineer friend. You are talking to administrative assistants, mechanics, artists, hair stylists and teachers. If you want their attention, speak the same language they do. 2. Smaller words, bigger impact. In an effort to look smart, we sometimes try to flex our vocabulary muscles too hard in advertising. But advertising speaks to people the same way you speak to a friend. You want to be on the same level, so don't use five syllable words in your copy. It will only come off as condescending and confusing. After you write something, try speaking it out loud. If you sound like you are reading an excerpt from a literary essay, change it to sound more natural, like your normal style of speech. Remember, as Stephen King advises, "Never say emolument when you mean tip." 3. Don't lose your message in overly complicated copy. Searching for the message in some advertisements can be like separating sand from sugar--you really have to work to find the good stuff. Only say what you need to say. Keep your message concise. You don't need to tout every magnificent quality of your product or service. Pick one or two of the best features and focus on those. 4. Use phrases that sell. These are familiar phrases that don't make people think hard about the implications. Notice that they are all under six words. 5. Simple ad campaigns, not just simple messages. Pick something that works and stick with it. The results of the survey: -------------------------- 1. Does pay-per-click bring more traffic than search engines? (Question submitted by: Sharon Lambkin) Yes - 34.78% No - 26.09% Not Sure - 39.13% 1a. Here are the most interesting reasons given: Bryce Grimsley: "No, because you are paying for a position that is not based on any content value." Warren Contreras: "Not sure, because I never tried it and don't plan to. The only people I want to find me are those that want a 'home business' which is not a cheap key word. Carol Curtin: "Yes, because I can get myself up near the top via my bids." Tony Rigby: "Yes. I have had pages ranked top 10 (in Search engines) by a 'pro' and the traffic was dismal though using popular, targeted keywords, waste of a lot of money and eventually these pages disappeared. GoTo.com however when I used it delivered me a constant flow of targeted visitors, and I could change the bid words anytime and no need to hire a SEO 'pro', puts you in control. PayPerClick works!" James E. D'Incecco: "No, why pay for the traffic when about 80% of sites are hit by searchers on search engines?" Nucha Aquino: "Yes, because it is very difficult to get a good position in search engines, now that they joint venture with major PayPerClicks, you can just bid for a top-something position, and get listed in the partnered search engines too." Comments: A very controversial subject. Many are not sure at all what is better, search engines or pay-per-click directories. From the webmasters point of view they do give control over placement, appearance and the targeted audience (key words). In my opinion webmasters will only use fitting keywords since they have to pay for them and using not fitting keywords will only generate costs and no sales. I haven't used pay-per-click myself yet, but In my opinion it is a good way to generate highly targeted traffic that I will carefully try myself soon. If you do have money in your advertising budget left, I recommend to give it a try too. 2. I know that not everyone can be #1, but how often do you list the same page with search engines? (Question submitted by: Sharon Lambkin) Once a month - 26.08% Only once - 17.39% Other - 26.08% Don't know - 30.43% 2a. Here are the most interesting interesting reasons given: Greg Granger: "Once... any more than this may be considered spamming." Bryce Grimsley: "Never oftener than 30 days. If I have good position (first page) I don't resubmit." Bonnie Archer: "Every 1-2 Months, because they drop pages all the time and sometimes they do not even list it." Tony Rigby: "I believe every 4 to 6 weeks is the norm up to every 3 months. You will find more info at www.selfpromotion.com." Nucha Aquino: "Once every 2 month to make sure they don't hate me for coming too often." Susan Elam: "I try to list the same page at least once a month to keep it listed near the top of the list. I feel that as other people list their site after me, the newer ones are on top." Comments: Most people don't know how often they should list the same page with search engine. But the next biggest group (26.08%) believes that once a month is good. My personal opinion is that you should resubmit only if the content of your page changed or the engine dropped the listing of that page, but not more often than once a month. 3. What is a FFA and why (or why not) would you use one? (Question submitted by: James E. D'Incecco) Bonnie Archer: "Free For All (FFA) means you can put your link on the page for free, expect a lot of email in return! The reason for doing this is to get a lot of links back to your webpage which in turn 'can' get you a higher ranking at search engines. You should use a junk email. If you join (use) a FFA as a pro you get to send your ads to all the people who put there link on them." Patricia Creasy: "I own 4 FFA pages and I really like them. Lots of email addresses to send your ad to. Greg Granger: "I would not use them, as they just don't work anymore. Everybody lists their links on them, and your link disappears so quickly that it probably won't even be seen by anybody." Bryce Grimsley: "Free for all link pages are a total waste of time. You roll off most pages in a matter of hours and most are just spam generators." Warren Contreras: "I don't use Free for All links pages nor do I believe that offering one is a good strategy. They are a waste of bandwidth because almost nobody reads that stuff and even the few that do don't act on it." Lee Traupel: "Free For All - they don't do anything to help rankings any longer....most are fertile ground for spammers to pick up e-mail addreses." Dave Lantz: "FFA can be used in ways others haven't thought of yet. I develop a few decent contacts using my own FFA page and classified site." Comments: I have my own FFA page at www.million-mall.com and from my own experience I can simply say this: If you post to FFA pages to try to increase your ranking in search engines (link popularity), make sure you don't use your general email address. Best would be an special email address that returns your autoresponse marketing message and then simply erases all incoming messages. For webmasters FFA are not completely useful and I even consider removing mine as well. The good part about FFA's: You can send out one marketing message to every user of the FFA. More I wouldn't recommend since that is im my opinion spamming... they didn't subscribe to any list. The bad part about FFA's: Do people read the marketing message? From my experience for sure less than 1 in 1,000! Additionally they tend to mess up web access statistics, especially if programs like SubmitWolf etc. list your FFA page (like mine). On some days I get more submissions to my FFA than visitors to the rest of my site! 4. Are you a subscriber of the More4you newsletter?
