Since people usually buy a product or service for the benefits they expect to get from it, what's hot with your prospects and customers are things such as: *the goals they want to achieve; *the problems they want to solve. Market research is - in a nutshell - the process of finding out what's hot with your prospects and customers (so you can help them achieve gain or eliminate pain through your products or services) and what's not (so you can avoid spending your energies in unprofitable directions). Market research is not difficult to conduct, and yields valuable insight. Such crucial information can show you, among other things: *which ideas for potential new products or services have the greatest likelihood of success; *how to improve your current products or services so as to offer better value and encourage satisfied customers to buy from you again; *how to appeal to your typical prospect in your marketing communications; *the concerns and questions your prospects and customers are most likely to have, so you can address them - even before they arise; *what your customers may dislike about your products/services, so that you can try to remedy the situation; Yes, market research can give you all this information - and more. As you may know, I'm the author of a growing list of several 'how-to' information products, all related to business success, covering topics such as free publicity, self-publishing, mail order, catalog marketing, time management, etc., which I market online and through my print catalog. In relation to my marketing efforts, questions have come up, such as: 1) Which of my several products are most appealing to my online prospects? 2) Which headlines generate the greatest response? I've gotten answers to these questions - and built my prospect and subscriber lists at the same time - through online market research. These tests are very much like tests a direct marketer might use in direct mailings or print publications with mail order ads. In traditional direct marketing, many print publications will, for a fee, allow you to use what is called split-run advertising. This is where half the circulation of the same issue is printed with one ad (A), and the other half of the issue is printed with another ad (B). Each ad is keyed in some way (given a unique identifier, such as different department number in the address) so it can be determined which ad generated the response. Response is calculated for each ad, and the results are compared to determine which yielded the best response. The winning ad is then used in future marketing efforts, at least until another test reveals an even better ad. Such split-run advertising in print publications can be very helpful for testing ad copy, prices, offers, etc., but it's expensive, and can take weeks or months for your ads to run. I especially like conducting market research online, because it's fast and cheap. Let me share an example of how I've conducted online market research. I selected Usenet newsgroups whose readers were likely interested in the benefits of my information products in which to run the tests. Two different postings were used for each test. The message of each posting was identical. I offered to send a text copy of any one of several of my Special Reports FREE by e-mail if the reader sent an e-mail message indicating which one they wanted. (To make such an offer online and fill the requests by e-mail only costs me some time.) The only difference between each posting of the test was that two different headlines (subject lines) were used, whose pulling power I wanted to compare with the other. For the most accurate results, conditions should be as identical as possible for each half of the test. An effort was therefore made to run each different headline several times each, running one headline one day, and the other the next, an equal number of times. Each newsgroup posting had a two-fold purpose: 1) To test the pulling power of each headline. The winner could then be used to improve future marketing communications. (Such a test can also be useful in selecting a title for an information product, since a product title is, in effect, a headline.) 2) To compare the popularity of each Special Report in relation to the others. The results would reveal which products should be given more prominence in my marketing efforts, and indicate likely areas for profitable expansion (spin-off products and services to add to my line). This is only one example to show you how market research can be conducted. Some other ways of conducting market research (some of which you can do online) are: *through market surveys; *through direct communication with your customers and prospects; *by analyzing sales records to see which of your existing products/services are most popular; *by examining other successful businesses in your field to see what has worked for them. There are many different possible directions you can take in business. If they are not 'hot' with your prospects or customers, in that they don't help them to achieve gain (reach a goal) or relieve pain (solve a problem), they probably aren't worth your time and effort. Market research can reveal such useful information to you. If I asked them what they thought, I would get. "Sponsor lots of people, but how?" ... "Mail thousands of mailers and tapes, but I can't afford it!" ... "Sponsor some heavy hitters, but where do I find them?" ... "Advertise in publications, newspapers, etc." "Spend lots of money promoting!" and many others. While there are many factors involved in becoming successful in MLM, most of them you can learn along the way. Just for your information some of these other factors are; Attitude Work ethic Passionate Teachable Have a Dream Plan/Goals Compassionate Teach Just Do It First we have to look at "What makes MLM work?" MLM is based on the principal of Geometric Progression! I'm sure you've all heard/seen the following. All you have to do is get 2 people. If those two get two each, you've now got 4 new people. And if those four get two each, you've now got 8 new people. Soon you've got 20,000 people in your downline and now a millionaire! I wish it was that simple. Now the shocking truth... "It is that simple!" The problem is most people won't wait long enough to give Geometric Progression a chance to work. How many of you have heard/seen the example of doubling a penny every day for 30 days. How much would you have after 30 days? Day 1 = $ 0.01 Day 2 = 0.02 Day 3 = 0.04 .... Day 10 = 5.12 .... Day 15 = 163.84 Turn those days into months (or years). After 15 months, if you were only making $163.84 would you quit? Would you last 10 months if you were only making $5.12? I bet most wouldn't last 3 months or would be so discouraged they had given up trying by then! Those that have PATIENCE/PERSISTENCE will reap the rewards... Day 30 = $ 5,368,709.12 I believe PATIENCE/PERSISTENCE is the key! We know that Geometric Progression works. We see many example of it working. From the example above to compound interest on your savings account. We can demonstrate that if you invested $10,000 in the bank and earned 5% interest for 20 years you'd have over $200,000 without ever investing another dime! Yes it was Geometric Progression that worked to turn $10,000 into $200,000. But, it was PATIENCE/PERSISTENCE that was required to allow Geometric Progression to work. Here's another little example. If all you did was sponsor 3 people, but took your time. Lets say 6 weeks for each one. That's a total of 4 1/2 months to sponsor 3 people. Now lets assume the 3 you sponsored did the same. You would only have 14 people in your downline after 6 months! But, at this rate of growth, how many would you have in your downline at the end of 1 year? (A) 26 (B) 50 (C) 76 (D) 151 (E) 275. And, do you have the PATIENCE/PERSISTENCE to stick it out to find out! The answer is at the end of this article. I sponsored a fellow into a MLM program I was promoting, who wanted to work the business. He had all the right qualities. He was enthusiastic, hard working, passionate about this business, teachable, willing to do anything to succeed. He lived a 2 hour drive from me. We set up his first meeting for the next month. I went to do the meeting and no one showed up. We spent the evening talking and planning for the next meeting he wanted to do, again in one month. Again, no one showed! We went for coffee and socialized. He wanted to do a business opportunity show in a mall the following month and we agreed to help him. When I got to the mall it was a small old strip plaza that had been turned into an indoor mall in a rundown part of town. We spent 4 days there. We talked to a number of people without much success. Finally, one of the other exhibitors came over and asked some questions. The next day he came back and asked some more questions. Eventually he came back and signed up. This took 3 months to sign up 1 person! This fellow I sponsored, in one year, now has several hundred distributors in his downline. Geometric Progression does not happen overnight, PATIENCE/PERSISTENCE is the only way to enjoy the benefits of it! So, what's the answer to my little example above... if you picked (E) you're right. How many people would you have after 2 years? The answer is 35,000+!!! PATIENCE/PERSISTENCE is the key! This article may be reprinted if left unaltered and with the following signature attached.
