They work even better today than in the past. That's probably because they satisfy the need today to get information quickly and easily. Postcards are one of the most effective tools you can use to build your business. They're low-cost and simple to use. You get results in just a few days. And, you can control the flow of responses to avoid "feast or famine" sales activity. Let's look at some benefits of using postcards to build your business. SAVE MONEY ON POSTAGE. The current postage for mailing a postcard is 20 cents. Yet, the U S Postal Service will process postcards just like First Class Mail. That's 1/3 less than the cost of a letter or self-mailer without losing any of the benefits of First Class Mail service. SIMPLE AND EASY TO PREPARE. By sending postcards you eliminate the work of folding, stuffing and sealing envelopes. You eliminate the cost of buying envelopes. You also substantially reduce the cost for paper and printing. You don't even need to spend a lot of time developing your promotional message. A brief "benefits stressing" message requiring a response for more information works best. Developing the message for a postcard is a lot like writing a classified ad. You probably already have an ad that could easily be used for your postcard message. Your postcards can be mailed within a few days of your decision to use them. And, in less than a week you will know your results. There are a few postal regulations for postcards concerning size, paper thickness and paper color. The minimum size for a postcard is 3 1/2 inches high by 5 inches long. The maximum size is 4 1/4 inches high by 6 inches long. A standard 4 x 6 index card can be mailed at the postcard rate. A 3 x 5 index card cannot be mailed because it is less than the minimum size of 3 1/2" x 5". A standard 8 1/2"x 11" sheet of index stock paper cut into 4 equal pieces will produce four 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 postcards that qualify for postcard postage. The minimum paper thickness is 0.007 inches and the maximum is 0.0095 inches. Don't try to figure out the technicalities of paper thickness. Just use paper with thickness similar to an index card and you will be well within specifications. For those who want to be more precise, use paper designated as 67# card stock (pronounced 67 "pound" card stock) or any paper designated as index stock. Paper used for a postcard can be any light color that does not prevent legible addresses and postmarks from being placed on the card. I've found light blue, light green, yellow, pink and tan/buff colors to be best. Postal Service regulations prohibit using "brilliant" colors. THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF PEOPLE WILL READ AND RESPOND Perhaps the greatest single benefit of the postcard format is its ability to get the maximum number of people to actually read your offer. Your postcard should be simple and present an uncluttered appearance. A personal message that is brief and easy to grasp in a second or two will get up to 95% or more readership. It only takes a flip of the wrist to get the message. Because more people read the message on a postcard, more people will respond to a postcard mailing than any other format. The area for your message is limited by the size of the postcard. That's one reason why postcards are best used as the first step in a 2 step sales process where you're just looking for qualified responses in the first step. Postcards will increase the number of qualified, interested prospects coming to your business. You'll still have to close the sale. But, you'll have many more opportunities to close sales. Implementing a successful postcard mailing program begins by determining who you want to mail your postcards to. You need to find or compile a mailing list of qualified prospects for your postcard offer. Spunt Someday, maybe not too far into the future, you are probably going to have thoughts about selling your business. You built it, with blood, sweat and toil, and for some reason you are going to be deciding to divest yourself of it. You could be wanting to retire, or move elsewhere, or are just burned out on the routine of the day to day operation. You should be aware of all the options that are available to you so that when the time comes, you can make a rational business decision and get the most for what you are trying to sell. There are four legal ways to divest yourself of your business. These are liquidation, doing it yourself without anybody's assistance, dealing with a broker (real estate or business) and there are advertising and marketing services that can help you. Let's understand the advantages or disadvantages of each choice. First we of course have the liquidation option, which is naturally not the first choice of any business owner unless they have suffered a debilitating health problem, or are financially unable to keep the doors open any longer. But, we must accept the fact that liquidation does have a 100% success rate. Everyone who attempts to liquidate, is successful. It is real easy to give things away, and for all intents and purposes, that is what you do when you liquidate at 10-20 cents on the dollar. Second, you could market your business all by yourself without anyone's help. You have to admit, it is difficult to be a pro at something you have never done before. Also, it is a task, that to be done right, should be a full time job. You probably don't have time for another full time job. Doing it yourself, means putting a sign out in front of the business, and running ads for buyers in most likely the local newspaper, both of which could effectively destroy your business. No business owner should ever contemplate selling his business until he realizes how important Confidentiality is to that task. The employees, if aware the business is for sale, will go looking for another job, worrying about their own security, and you can't blame them. The vendors, creditors, and suppliers who once extended credit, would put you on a cash and carry basis, not knowing how long you are going to be around. The customers would begin to think that you don't care any longer, and aren't going to be around to stand behind your products or services, so they look elsewhere for someone to service them. Your competition jumps on the chance to spread nasty rumors that you are going out of business. Can you afford the advertising that it would take to locate a buyer for your business, and do you have time to sift through all the inquiries until you can find the one serious qualified one who wishes to buy your business? Overwhelming, isn't it? Third, you could do what most people do, and hire a broker. Brokers have a 5-8% success rate nationwide, an average marketing time of 2-3 years, over 98.8% of the deals they have been involved in since Jimmy Carter was President have had to be financed by the owner of the business, and NO BROKER can keep it Confidential for you. When you hire a broker to sell your business, you hire someone who is hired to talk. The more people he talks to, the better his chances of finding one who might be interested in buying the business. Brokers are actually very passive in marketing businesses, taking a listing then throwing it against the wall and hoping it will stick until someone walks in or calls, that is interested in buying it. Brokers are local people and only know local people. Ask yourself this question. When is the last time someone walked in your door and said he/she would like to buy your business? If it isn't happening then consider the fact that your buyer is most likely to be coming from somewhere else, so why hire a local broker who only knows the same people who would have come to see you anyway if they were really serious about buying your business. A local buyer doesn't have to see a sign or a broker, if he wanted to buy your business, he would walk in and tell you he was interested in it. It happens every day. On top of that realize that a local buyer thinks with local economics and mentality, and won't pay you for the goodwill you established in your business. Your goodwill is your customers and reputation. He knows everybody in town too, why pay you for the same people. A buyer who comes from somewhere else wants to buy your goodwill. A local buyer will offer you a dollar down and a dollar a month, since this is the way we seem to do things in this country now and, offer you 50-60 cents on the dollar for what it is worth. Plus, a broker is naturally going to take 7-19% of the purchase price of the business for a commission. This can be quite a large sum according to the value of your business, and it comes out first in escrow, often leaving nothing for you until you receive monthly payments. Is there another more realistic option? Actually there is another alternative and it is one that is having phenomonal results. For the last 18 years there have been advertising and marketing services that have been very successful in matching buyers and sellers together and allowing them to negotiate directly with each other. By pooling together numerous business owners to be able to afford to run ads extensively around the world in print media publications that people with money read, like the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, etc. When buyers respond to the generic ads that maintain confidentiality, they are then coded based upon four main criteria of 1) type of business 2) location 3) price and 4) terms. Buyers and sellers are then precisely matched together and put in confidential contact with each other. Professionally designed portfolios are done about the business and sent to the buyer to pique his interest and through the confidential contact information is able to negotiate to a successful sale. These services usually also help provide Business Valuations to help prove the worth of the business. The fees for this type of service are just a fraction of what brokers charge, and there is a much higher chance of success in locating a qualified buyer. This is also the only reliable way to maintain and protect the confidentiality. Now that you know the four options available to you, a choice should be easy for you to make.
